Resources, Tips & Advice to help you start, and run, your own business from home

Internet

Your Internet Connection
Just as your choice of computer can be vital to your business, so your link to the internet can be critical.  Bearing in mind the financial consequences to your business of not being able to receive email queries and orders from customers I would recommend choosing a well know, reliable company such as
AOL or  BT to supply your internet connection. The AOL and BT Total Broadband packages both seem particularly good value and both of these well known, and respected, companies provide excellent technical support.

Pay-As-You-Go Dial-Up or Broadband
?
Now-a-days most people will automatically opt for a high speed Broadband connection to the internet.  But not every part of the country has access to Broadband, also, if your business is not computer based (for example you may be a builder), you may only need occasional access to the internet just to check for emails or to to look up something once or twice a week. In these circumstances you may find a Pay-As-You-Go dial-up internet connection is quite sufficient for your needs. Even if you have a Broadband connection you may still find it handy to have a Pay-As-You-Go available as a standby in case your Broadband connection goes out of action for a day or two due to a technical problem.  I don’t think the modern idea to automatically opt for Broadband is not necessarily always the most cost effective choice; but if your work is computer based and you need internet access at least once a day then Broadband probably is your best option. As I mentioned above I would recommend taking a look at
BT Total Broadband or AOL for your Internet Service Provider (ISP) as both are well known and respected companies.

On-Line Virus & Hacker Protection
Do not forget that protection from hackers and virus is essential these days so make sure your PC is protected by reliable and up-to-date Firewall and Anti-Virus software. I particularly recommend the range of Anti-Virus software from
McAFEE.  You can purchase McAfee software online direct from McAFEE or from PC WORLD and CURRYS.

Using Your PC to Lower Your Phone Bill
Connecting your PC to the Internet often brings up visions of soaring phone bills but don’t forget that you may find having an internet connected PC may actually reduce your phone bills, especially if you make a lot of calls abroad. Take a look at the
SKYPE website to see how you may be able to use your PC to save money on your phone calls by using a headset connected to your PC to make calls over the internet.

Wired or Wireless?
These days there is no need to connect to the internet using wires.  Wireless connection kits are available from a number of sources such as
DABS that allow you to use your laptop anywhere in your house/office.
